IN CHARACTER

Character Name: Douglas Ramsey a.k.a. Cypher
Canon: Marvel Comics (Earth-616 core universe)
Canon Point: Daredevil #606

In-Game Tattoo Placement: on his stomach
Current Health/Status: Healthy/stable.
Age: 19. This is an estimated age for the sake of the game, as Marvel is horrendous about ages. Doug would have been 16 when he died and shouldn't have aged as much as the rest of his team given how long he was dead, but the comics treat him like an adult rather than a teenager. I don't think it's right to age him up too much when X-Men that were young at the time of his revival haven't been given the same treatment.
Species: Human mutant.

History: written up by me on a separate page here

CRAU History and Impact: n/a

Personality: Doug sees the world on a completely different level that everyone else because of his powers and that used to leave him a little spacey, speaking of the language in everything with such confidence. He's since been brought back down to earth and acts like your friendly neighborhood nerd again, but those abilities are still there - even when the writers forget about them. This just means its easier to break the ice with him with some tech talk and pop culture references.

He's more of a follower than a leader, and perfectly okay with that. For all his language skills, he's surprisingly bad at convincing others to do anything. Not being one of the more powerful mutants, he's used to being brought along for roles like translating and hacking. It's what he's good at. He isn't forceful unless he finds it absolutely necessary. This doesn't mean he's a doormat, but it means one doesn't typically have to argue with him to get him to go along with things. While he's capable of physical combat he'd much rather avoid it and take a backseat role.

Doug's a nice guy. Easy going when something isn't stressing him out. He's had his moments in the past, but typically he's a gentleman. As an X-Man, he follows a heroic set of personal guidelines. He's understanding of gray areas and operating outside the law is very common among the super-powered but he'll lean toward doing what is morally good. He's just no Avenger. (Not until they ask him, anyway.)

He's always had some self-sacrificial tendencies - that's how he was killed for the second time and how he was almost killed several times before, leaping in the way of some blast even though he doesn't have the same sorts of physical powers others do. After he saw his potential future as a megalomaniacal dictator he began experiencing frequent dreams about it that made him downright suicidal. At the same time, he does fear death. Being killed and brought back has given his life a feeling of impermanence. He fears making too many attachments because there's no promise he'll be around long enough to make anything of it. For now he's just plodding along. Sometimes he does feel the need to separate himself from others for a while, but so far this has generally been to his detriment.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping: Omniligualism. While originally this manifested simply as understanding every spoken and written language, including those used by computers, the true potential of his powers wasn't reached until after he was raised from the dead (in canon). He can now read and decipher anything that can in any way be considered a language - any encryption imaginable, body language, architecture, magic, etc. Some in-canon examples are as follows:

- He can find the true meaning behind others' spoken words.
- He can read an attack before it happens as long as he can see the one attacking and their movements have thought behind them.
- He can quickly learn how to play new instruments.
- He can see the outside of a building and get a good idea of what's behind its walls.
- He can pick up magic usable by a non-magic individual if given the means.
- He can discern the recipe for an item of food just by eating it.
- His skills can easily translate to thievery, and he's stolen Daredevil's cell phone right off his belt without him noticing.
- On multiple occasions he's communicated with machinery without touching it, including telling bombs to deactivate themselves.
- He does particularly well in mindscapes, once avoiding having his mind destroyed by rewriting his own code. He's also "told" a technovirus within him to back down. He can go into his own mind with the help of someone who can mentally connect with him.

There are plenty of other things not shown in canon that should also follow these rules. Language is found in all forms of art and combat.

What he can't do is read people's minds directly. Those who's mental faculties are hampered in one way or another or those who plan little before they act are much harder to read. There are certain aspects of his powers that he's mostly avoided using ever since he was made to attack his own teammates. It left him a little traumatized and violence isn't really his thing anyway. He doesn't typically read people too heavily if he doesn't have to, and he avoids engaging in physical violence. The canon is also particularly bad about being consistent with his abilities - one of the problems with continuous changes in writers.

It's not always something he can control completely - for example, he developed a literal addiction to the internet due to his powers kicking in and trying to make sense of the whole thing (an impossibility). He will also generally be one of the first to recognize when reality has been shifted.

Aside from this, Doug has no real major physical strengths or weaknesses. He's scrawny and just physically fit enough to do some damage. The chances of people being able to walk away from any punches he throws are high.

He has the weaknesses of any regular human. On top of that, the fact that his abilities are typically passive means that he can't always control when they go into overdrive trying to decipher something, as was the case with his internet issues.

As for power warping, dreams have always been one of the things he's had a harder time reading. He's tried to translate his own dreams in the past with mixed success. (Basically he didn't learn any more from them than someone without powers might figure out.) It would make sense that his powers just might not always work in Deerington - especially if that will keep him from infomodding or solving something too quickly.

Inventory: A laptop and his phone. He doesn't have many other important possessions.

Writing Samples: 1) puzzle solving. 2) battle chess
